Use it or lose it could be a good way to sum up how to keep your air conditioning at its optimum.

Here’s a few ways you can help your air con work better for longer.

Run it for at least 10 minutes every week. This will help prevent hoses from hardening and compressor seals from failing.

Switching it to its coldest setting and turning the fan full-on will disperse any moisture and help prevent mildew.

When using the air con keep your windows up all the way. Having the windows open not only impacts on the air con’s effectiveness, it creates drag around the vehicle affecting its aerodynamics. This will hit fuel consumption.

If you hear a squeak similar to that of the fan belt, this could be an early warning the belt on the compressor is on the way out. Don’t delay. Book a service.

Leaks are one of the most common problems. The longer you leave it for your air con to be checked, the more likely this could be an issue.

It’s better to get into the routine of having it checked on a regular basis by expert technicians. In addition to re-gassing where necessary they will clean and debug it, check the filter and condenser fins and vacuum the system thoroughly.
